THE GOLDEN VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL THEATRE & FILM

  Student Technician Certification

Purpose

The Golden Valley Theatre is a working theatre, used by many groups.  As a student in Theatre 3, you must become proficient in the operation of the various systems which make up this facility.  Once you have proven your proficiency in the operation of the sound, lighting, and fly systems, you will be awarded the designation of “Student Technician.”  With this designation, you will be able to help with Golden Valley-sponsored events in the theatre and continue your studies in theatrical design.

Activities

  • Watch the following three podcasts and take VERY thorough notes on how each system is operated:

  • After watching the videos, participate in a Systems Lab.  This is in-class, supervised lab time, during which you will be able to practice the operation of the three systems and ask any clarifying questions.

Performance Assessment

Once you have completed the above activities, you will synthesize your notes to create an instruction manual.  Assume that your reader is totally unfamiliar with the operation of these systems.  For each system, provide a brief overview:  What does it do?  Why is it important?  What are the different components?  Make sure to provide very thorough, step-by-step directions for each of the following:

The Lighting System

  • How do you turn the system on?
  • How do you turn on a single light, or a group of lights?
  • How do you record a cue?
  • How do you turn the system off?

The Sound System

  • How do you turn the system on?
  • How do you connect a microphone?
  • How do you play music?
  • How do you turn the system off?

The Fly System

  • What are the basic safety rules?
  • How do you hang something on a pipe?
  • How do you weight and reweight a pipe?

Rubric

Below is the rubric which will be used to grade your performance assessment.  You must receive either "Proficient" or "Exemplary" in every category!  Visual aids are helpful.  Feel free to incorporate any pictures from your own camera, or those posted on this class website.  If you use photos from the internet (NOT ones you took yourself, or ones from this website), then you MUST attribute the picture to the original website.
